Designer Engineer

Job Description – Designer Engineer

Main Purpose of Position:

The design of machines and manufacturing systems in order fulfil the specification outlined in the customers order and the Mechatronic quotation.

Design to ensure the machines and systems meet the specification outlined in the customers order, and are designed, built and delivered on time, within budget and are “right first time”.

Reports to:

The Design Office Manager

Interfaces with:

Managing Director, General Manager, Sales Manager, Control Engineers, Operations Manager, Workshop Team Leader, Financial Administrator, Project Leaders, the Build Group.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities:

  1. Design machines and systems from the concept stage through to the final detailed stage in order to fulfil the specification outlined in the customers order and in the Mechatronic quotation.
    1. Involved with the planning, organising and managing meetings with the Customer in conjunction with the Project Leader
    2. Specifying and competitively obtaining quotations for the purchasing of tooling and bought out items (hands on and via the Purchasing Engineer), in order to start the build process on time and to within budget.
    3. Actively working within the agreed budget, and reporting via the Mechatronic reporting systems
    4. Communicating and reporting on project progress (time and finance) via the Mechatronic reporting systems
    5. Solving problems and initiating corrective actions as required ensuring that the project is completed on time and within budget.
  2. Observe and comply with:
    1. Mechatronic System of budgetary control.
    2. Mechatronic Reporting and management systems.
    3. ISO 9001 Quality System.
    4. CE Safety Standards.
  3. Assist with the preparation and compiling of manuals and other related documents.
  4. Creation of pneumatic specification & diagrams
  5. Assist in the control specification & sequencing documents
  6. Specification of all sensors & ancillary equipment needed to achieve the final design
  7. Work with & improvement of the Mechatronic design & build standards

Nature and scope of Position:

  • A Mechatronic project can vary in size from £50k up to £2m.
  • Designs are undertaken using 2D and Inventor 3D CAD software.
  • Mechatronic designs are expected to be innovative, robust, have a “wow” factor and be “right first time”.
  • Underpinning all Mechatronic Jobs are the Mechatronic systems and procedures (See Mechatronic Operations Manual), and the need to comply with the ISO 9001 Quality System and CE safety standards.
  • It is part of the Mechatronic ethos to delight the Customer and surpass their expectations.

Controls Engineer

Job Description – Controls Engineer

Main Purpose of Position:

The design and building of machine control systems, control panels, machine circuit diagrams, the design and writing of software so that specially designed machines function as intended.

Writing, commissioning, de-bugging and upgrade software on our site and at Customers’ works in order to meet Customers’ requests and or to satisfy Mechatronic warranties.

Reports to:

The Senior Controls Engineer

Responsible for:

Electricians, Contract Electricians

Interfaces with:

Other Controls Engineers; Electrical engineers; Contractors; Technical Director, Operations Manager, Workshop Team Leader Project Leaders and Mechanical Designers.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities:

  1. Design electrical control systems and circuits in order achieve the overall design intent (functionality) of the machine in order to meet the machine build plan.
  2. Create electrical schematics using Engineering Base & AutoCad LT.
  3. Asses Safety Systems, create Sistema documentation, and undertake lightguard testing and document. Design, write, and install software for safety PLC’s
  4. Order materials, plan and manage the building of control cabinets (the cabinet build plan), on time, within budget, within the Customers’ specification in order to satisfy the machine build plan.
  5. Plan and organise the hard wiring of machines, integration of cabinets and related electrical components on time, within budget, within the Customers’ specification in order to satisfy the machine build plan.
  6. Practical building of control cabinets and integrating them into machines and systems.
  7. Design, write, and install PC, PLC, HMI software to machines on time, within the customers’ specification in order to satisfy the machine build plan. Common software platforms are Omron, Mitsubishi, Allen Bradley and Siemens, but other platforms may also be needed to meet customer specification requirements.
  8. Design, write, and install Robot Software and interface with the machines on time, within the customers’ specification in order to satisfy the machine build plan.
    Common software platforms are Fanuc and Staubli, but other platforms may also be needed to meet customer specification requirements.
  9. Design, write, and install Servo Systems, network Communications, and Data Handing to machines on time, within the customers’ specification in order to satisfy the machine build plan. Common platforms are Devicenet, Ethernet IP, Fins, but other platforms may also be needed to meet customer specification requirements.
  10. Commission the electrical installation and associated software, run up the machine, and optimise the circuitry and software, so that the machine functions correctly.
  11. Attend meetings as requested in order to give status reports, and to support the day to day management of the project plan.
  12. Maintain and file all relevant documents and records, update build manuals in order to allow easy retrieval and as part of the ISO 9000 quality system.
  13. Suggest improved methods to existing and proposed designs. Actively participate (with the Technical Team) in design reviews, control design reviews and design (kaizen) workshops.
  14. Deputise for the Senior Controls Engineer in his absence including attending meetings, reporting to management and responding to call outs.
  15. The job will be reviewed by the senior controls engineer six monthly and will include the setting of objectives for the following period.

Definitions

  1. The Machine Build Plan plans the building of machines to achieve the delivery on time and within budget.
  2. The Panel Build Plan plans the building of the panel so that the panel is built in advance of the machine build plan.
  3. The Electrical Build Plan refers to all electrical control activities (design, panel build, wire up, commission etc)
  4. The Project Plan covers all activities, in all departments, from order through to the final delivery and includes 1, 2 and 3 above.

This dynamic business, based in the Midlands and employing approximately 50 people, is well placed for continued success.  To support ongoing development the business is looking to appoint an experienced, commercially minded Finance Manager to work with the senior management team to create sustained profitable growth.

The role requires a commercially focused individual capable of contributing at both a strategic and operational level.  The Finance Manager will be required to work closely with the other members of the senior management team and provide strong leadership and support in helping to improve the project management and process controls within the business, as well as contributing to commercial decision making.  The Finance Manager must be actively involved at all levels of the business, be analytically focused and at the same time have the strength of character to seek out and drive through necessary systems and process improvements.

The role

  • Working closely with the Managing Director providing analytical and financial management support in running the business
  • Lead and manage a small finance and administration team, providing a full accounting and administration service to the business. This will include ensuring that reliable and relevant management accounting information, including profit & loss reports, balance sheets, project cost analysis, budgets and forecasts are produced (including accounting for long-term contracts) and preparation of annual accounts and returns
  • Contribute to the commercial decision making of the business including customer proposals, pricing, contractual terms and payment arrangements
  • Participate in the establishment and delivery of strategic initiatives to enable the business to meet and exceed growth and profitability goals
  • Provide robust financial analysis and implications on customer projects as they progress through the business, including reviewing costs to date, costs to complete and resource planning
  • Responsible for ensuring strong cash management practices are embedded in the business including providing financial support in respect of the purchasing activities of the business
  • Oversee payroll and associated activities
  • Responsible for ensuring that appropriate systems and controls are in place, as well as for helping to develop a culture of continuous improvement

  • A confident individual, with previous experience in a senior finance position

  • IT literate, with advanced spreadsheet modelling abilities and a good knowledge of ERP systems would be an advantage

The Buyer will be required to work closely with the other members of the project team and reports to the Operations Director.

The role

  • Competitively purchase tooling and other bought out items, as requested by the Project Leaders in order to start the build process on time and within budget, ensuring that the purchased items fully comply with the design specification and the Customer’s specification.
  • Order materials for the control cabinets, on time, within budget, within the Customers’ specification in order to satisfy the cabinet build plan.
  • Select, specify and order materials, tooling as well as general workshop consumables, in order to satisfy the build and service plan as well as the day operation of the factory, in conjunction with the Team Leader.
  • Order consumables for the Electrical department, working in conjunction with the Electricians and Controls Manager.
  • Feedback and update the ‘Latest Indicated Costs’ (LIC) budget for each project, working in conjunction with the Project Leaders.
  • Actively manage the supply of materials for projects to agreed project timelines. Report the status of deliverables to the Operations Director.
  • Manage supplier relationships to get best value from suppliers. This must include price, delivery time and quality.
  • Monitor Supplier performance.
  • Work with current ordering systems and purchase order processing systems.
